CREATIVE WORKSHOP

©  James Trueman

I have  always been  keen  in challanging  myself to create models, furniture and  clothing. Many of  the scale  models  I  have  made  have  been long  gone, but  I have  built garden archways in previous homes to my own designs. More  recently I have  turned  to  up-cycling clothing. Please  see  this  page  for various  projects I  have  completed.

This Jacket was  created  using two  pairs  of old  jeans, one  green  and  one  khaki. Tracing  a  pattern from an  existing  denim  jacket I  created  a  pattern. I  used the trouser back pockets  and recycled a  zip  from and  old  fleece. The  back detail I  took from seeing  such a  jacket  on my travels  in  France.

For  this denim jacket I  used  various  old  pair  of  blue  jeans (about  4  pairs!). I  unpicked all the  seams to  get the  maximum use  of the  material.  I  roughed  out  a  sketch  before  creating  a  pattern. I traced  it  again from a  denim jacket but changing size  etc. The  folded  details  on arms  and  back were  bit of an  experiment.

While  in Holland  I  saw a  black and  white  Jacket that  I really liked, but  nothing  in my size, either too  large  or  too small. I  decided to make  my own  verion. I  used curtain  material. I  made a  pattern from an exisitng hooded  jacket , adjusting  the  pattern to  add the  black details. As  with te  other  jackets  I  also  added  lining recyling other  materials.

This  is a  video  I  did  some  year  ago  of a  long  coat I  made,  based  on David Tennant's  Dr  Who. Upcylced  from a pair  of  old  curtains!

Another  video  from some  years ago  I  did for a #paintingeffect for old furniture This is a burr walnut effect - good for making cheap furniture appear like wood. I  used  artist  oil tubes Burnt Sienna and Naples Yellow. Depending on the tones you want to achieve you could use other related colours - such as Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre. Using  a  1 inch brush or  larger paint  dab on the  colour. As  oil  paint is  low  to  dray  you  have  ome time to  go  onto  next stage. Using  a  piece  of  carboard (rough  edged)  created a  burl  walnut effect   by dragging  cardboard  in  circluar  shapes - excuse the sound  quality.
